House Speaker Todd Huston Kills Pro-life Amendments

Dear Friend,

I have an update for you on what happened yesterday.

And let me tell you, our new House Speaker’s true colors are shining through.

Yesterday, I let you know that Representative Peggy Mayfield was considering killing her own pro-life bill just to avoid a roll call vote on Rep. Curt Nisly’s chemical abortion ban amendment.

I asked you to urge her not to kill the bill and to support Rep. Nisly’s amendment.

Well, Rep. Mayfield did not kill her own bill, but she and the Establishment worked together to ensure Rep. Nisly’s amendments would NOT get a vote. They made sure Rep. Jacob's amendments wouldn't either.

House Speaker Todd Huston was certainly taking notes when he shadowed Brian Bosma.

Huston used his power as Speaker of the House to pull sneaky tricks and avoid a roll call vote on strong pro-life amendments.

When Mayfield’s bill came up, Huston rushed through the process, essentially making sure no amendment could be brought forth. Throughout the session, Huston even gave Democrats time to amend bills, but he purposely hurried through HB 1577 so no amendments could be proposed and voted on.

Speeding through Mayfield’s bill was not the only trick Huston had up his sleeve.

Rep. Nisly also proposed an amendment to the budget, and Rep. John Jacob seconded the proposal. This amendment stated that the legislators would not receive a paycheck until they voted on abolishing abortion.

In standing for this amendment, both Nisly and Jacob proved they care more about unborn babies than they do about their paychecks.

The rest of the political class, however, does not.

Huston refused to allow a vote on this amendment, ruling it irrelevant to the budget.

If legislator payroll isn’t part of the Indiana State budget, then I don’t know what is!

House Speaker Todd Huston revealed his true colors yet again when Rep. John Jacob attempted an amendment.

Rep. Jacob called down his amendment, and Rep. Nisly seconded the motion.

But Huston ruled that there was no second! He pretended Rep. Nisly was not speaking and refused to allow Rep. Jacob to present his amendment.

Pretending someone doesn’t exist is elementary school shenanigans. And that’s the sort of game our Indiana House Speaker loves to play.

My friends, what are these “pro-life” Republicans afraid of?

They plot and scheme to avoid a roll call vote. What are they hiding? If they are pro-life, then why do they REFUSE to go on the record with their views on abortion?

Our “pro-life” elected officials have plenty to say about abortion when they’re seeking your support at election time, but when it comes to hard hitting policies to save babies, they refuse to go on the record.

The good news is there are two brave, principled legislators, in the Indiana House working to abolish abortion in our state—Rep. Nisly and Rep. Jacob.

And so, the rest of the Republicans are shaking in their boots at the thought of having to vote on abortion.

Oh, they’re not scared to vote on do-nothing bills that allow for the legalized killing of unborn children after cleaning clinics, signing permission slips, or even promising to bury the dead baby.

But they sure are weaseling out of voting on solid pro-life legislation.

The Establishment hopes their House floor theatrics were enough to make us throw in the towel.

We can’t give up now! We must continue to stand up for every unborn baby’s God given right to live.

That’s why House Speaker Todd Huston needs to hear from you.

Call him and tell him he should be ashamed of his behavior on the house floor last night. Tell him he should stop behaving like a school yard bully. Let him know you want an up or down roll call vote on hard hitting pro-life legislation, not the kind that doesn’t really save any babies.

Then, call your own state Rep. and let them know you want them to abolish abortion in Indiana.

Thank you so much for making those calls. They really do make a difference.

I’ll be watching what happens during the rest of the legislative session and make sure to update you on issues relating to our pre-born neighbors.

P.S. Rep. Mayfield collaborated with House Speaker Todd Huston to ensure no roll call vote on hard hitting amendments to her bill could happen.

Huston played school yard bully and refused to allow Rep. Nisly and Rep. Jacob to move forward with their amendments. See above for details of Huston’s shenanigans.

What are our “pro-life” legislators afraid of? Why do they REFUSE to go on the record with their pro-life views?

Call Rep. Huston today and tell him to stop playing games with the lives of unborn children. Tell him he should not be a bully like Brian Bosma.
